Free will: means vs ends

Some possibilities regarding the path of our life:

1 The path of our life is unknowable prior to each individual choice, even to God.

… this idea maximizes our free will but denies God’s infinite knowledge.

2 The path of our life is already known to God, in every single step.

… we have to wrestle with how God can know what we will do & yet we can freely choose.

3 The path of our life is already known and ordained by God.

… maximizes God’s control, but we have no free will in reality.

4 There is not one single path: every possible path is represented before God.

… God is “God of all the metaverses”

… but, how does this make the path I know about meaningful?

In my experience, few people actually believe scenario 1 in practicality. And, when we ask for God’s guidance, we are by implication thinking of stage 2 and 3. But isn’t scenario 4 really less about the path (“which path is less painful” for example), and more about how God is forming us and our character on any given individual path?

What happened to the unreached this week?

Each Friday I send a newsletter to over 2,400 mission activists, advocates, managers, field workers, and pastors - about what happened among the unreached, and what could happen next. Each issue comes with a curated list of nearly 100 links, and note why each is important. You can get on the list for free.
