Doubling Times

09 Jul 2023

A key goal in DMM is multiplication / doubling. The ‘time to double’ is important.

  • 10 doubles will get you to 1,000 members,
  • 14 will get you to 10,000 members (further than most movements),
  • 17 will get you to 100,000,
  • 20 will get you to 1 million members (only a handful of movement are this big), and
  • 24 will bring you well across the 100 million member line.

But doubling brings up the idea of “each one wins one” which often runs into challenges of breaking out of known groups. A more excellent way, perhaps: coaching circles.

Coaching circles of 3+1 (a +1 coach being someone who is a little further along than the other 3; this coach is also in a coaching circle) leads to X3 multipliers while keeping groups small. With coaching circles:

  • 7 multiples gets you over 1,000 members and 100 churches;
  • 9 multiples is over 10,000 members and 1,000 churches;
  • 13 multiples is over 1 million;
  • 17 multiples is over 100 million.

Considering each generation can take 1 to 2 years to form, it seems that cutting the time to multiply a generation is a good thing.

What happened to the unreached this week?

Each Friday I send a newsletter to over 2,400 mission activists, advocates, managers, field workers, and pastors - about what happened among the unreached, and what could happen next. Each issue comes with a curated list of nearly 100 links, and note why each is important. You can get on the list for free.
